Engineering Design Group Deploys Soil-Gas Profiling Instruments at Carbon Management Canada’s Field Research Station

BROOKS, ALBERTA – July 23, 2026

Carbon Management Canada's (CMC) Joint Industry Partnership (JIP) welcomes Engineering Design Group (EDG) to their field site as part of the AMPS (Advanced Multi-Physics Spare monitoring project) funded by Emission Reduction Alberta (https://www.eralberta.ca/projects/details/advanced-multi-physics-sparse-monitoring-amps/). 

EDG will support the CMC Containment and Monitoring Innovation (CaMI) team's initiatives by collecting soil-gas concentration and environmental data with their instruments, and making this data available to the CaMI team and JIP members.

Two instruments were installed at the Newell County Field Research Station (FRS) in May 2026, and are the first of their kind installed in Canada.  The instruments operate autonomously on a pre-programmed schedule, and are measuring CO2 and O2 gas concentrations at multiple depths down to 4.5 meters. Data from the instruments is transmitted to a cloud application for data analysis.

“Before EDG’s installation, soil-gas concentrations at the site have been collected manually,” says Dr. Marie Macquet, Vice President of Research and Operations at CMC.  “A single EDG instrument can provide 2000+ sets of measurements per year. The value is tremendous considering the cost of manually sampling, which usually only gathers 3-4 sets of data per year, weather permitting. The FRS provides a unique opportunity to assess innovative monitoring technologies, and we are excited to be the first in Canada to deploy EDG’s instruments and compare them against conventional systems.”
