Soil Gas Sampling for Carbon Capture

At Edg, we've transformed environmental monitoring for carbon sequestration. Our automated soil gas sampling stations obtain baseline measurements for Class VI wells before injection. And after injection begins, our platform fulfills long-term requirements for your testing and monitoring plan, including scheduled daily measurements for CO2 in the soil, and verification against baseline data.

Trusted by Leading Organizations

Engineering Design Group (Edg) is at the forefront of environmental monitoring for Class VI injection wells, specializing in automated soil gas sampling stations for geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide.

Since 2020, our cutting-edge sampling stations have reshaped how the industry monitors soil gas by facilitating automated real-time measurements while eliminating human error and other inconsistencies that come from manual monitoring.

With our industrial-grade instrumentation and secure cloud platform, we are committed to enhancing the effectiveness of the measuring, monitoring, and verification plan for your injection well. This is accomplished by installing a minimum of ten base stations around a single injection well.

Each base station operates independently of the others, waking several times per day on a programmed schedule to sample soil gas contents and environmental conditions at its location. Collected data from all base stations is transmitted to the EDG Client Portal with cellular technology, where it can be viewed, collated, and compared against pre-injection baseline measurements.

As EDG continues to push the boundaries of what's possible in remote monitoring, we do so with a clear focus: to equip you with not just data, but the means to use it effectively.

The First to Automate Soil Gas Sampling in Carbon Capture

EDG’s platform recorded more than what is possible with handheld gas meters, especially considering Wyoming’s harsh climate. Our research wouldn’t have been the same without this level of automation.

Your raw sensor data is always accessible, whether you want to view it in our Client Portal dashboard, or access it with an external application via our API.

Features

Automated Monitoring & Verification

From automated data collection to real-time reporting and analysis, we provide a complete end-to-end platform, integrating cutting-edge hardware and software for effective environmental and soil gas monitoring at your injection wells.

1
Measure
Soil gas contents and environmental conditions are sampled on a schedule.
2
Monitor
Real-time data is transmitted to the Client Portal for monitoring.
3
Verify
Data is retained for long-term reporting and verification purposes.

Hardware

Our instrumentation is low-impact, fully contained, and equipped to measure soil gas samples on a pre-programmed daily schedule.

Installed base stations surrounding an injection well stay in a low power "sleep" mode between each programmed sampling interval. At each sampling interval, the instrumentation wakes, and samples the soil gas.

Modern LTE Cat M1 (LTE-M) connectivity is used by each base station to transmit data to the Client Portal cloud application, using the best network available around the injection well. Multiple Tier 1 networks are supported, allowing for installations globally.

After a base station completes data transmission, it will return to sleep, while a solar panel will resume charging an internal smart battery pack.

EDG is committed to your injection well’s longevity. We supply lifetime over-the-air (OTA) updates to our instrumentation, keeping each base station ahead in security and performance without any service interruptions or downtime in soil sampling.

Client Portal Dashboard

The EDG Client Portal cloud application simplifies monitoring and verification of your soil gas and environmental data, and is designed for seamless collaboration with your team and partners.

Through the Portal, you can view plots of data with respect to time, download ranges of data to a CSV file, and manage activity for groups of soil sampling stations.

Historical data from each of your base stations is retained in the cloud, raw and unmodified, just as it was sampled by the instrumentation.

Our platform allows for easy and centralized project management, regardless of the number of base stations or injection wells being monitored. And you can invite team members and partners, and make your data available to them while restricting them from important controls, such as changing sampling schedules or notification triggers.

Included with our Client Portal is complete access to our API, which facilitates importing your data into applications of your own. Alternatively, use the API to ingest data from external systems so you can store and analyze it alongside your soil gas samples.

Environmental Monitoring, Conveniently From Your Desktop

EDG’s solution blends rugged hardware with a powerful cloud platform and a robust API.

Thousands of Data Samples
Remotely monitor thousands of data samples per injection well for a more comprehensive picture of the environment, leading to more informed verification and decision-making.
Low-Impact Installations
Cables and connections are contained to each independent base station. The result is a simple and low-impact installation, with no external cables being run at the injection well.
Global Connectivity
Our instrumentation relies on LTE Cat M1 (LTE-M) technology to transmit data to the cloud, using the best network available. Multiple Tier 1 networks are supporting, allowing for installations globally.
Smart Battery Pack
Power to each station is supplied by a rechargeable smart battery pack. Battery charge statistics are remotely available in the Client Portal, allowing for planned servicing with minimal system downtime.
Data Accessibility
Your data is always accessible from the Client Portal dashboard. Utilize our API to export soil gas samples to external systems, or ingest outside data to view alongside data sampled by our instrumentation.
Lifetime Security Updates
Over-the-air (OTA) security updates are deployed to our requipment automatically with no service interruptions. No user intervention is necessary.
Automatic Scheduled Operation
The instrumentation wakes from a low-power mode on a pre-programmed sampling schedule. When each system wakes, soil gas is sampled and data is trasmitted to the Client Portal.
Remote Management
Edg instrumentation is designed to be remotely managed from the Client Portal application. Setup sampling schedules, run diagnostics, and calibrate individual systems — all from the web.
For Baseline and Verification
Use our instrumentation to collect baseline data prior to injection. And keep base stations installed during injection to see how soil samples differ from baseline data through the seasons.

UW Partners with EDG in a Milestone Carbon Capture Initiative

In 2020, the University of Wyoming’s (UW) School of Energy Resources turned to Edg to help them solve a critical problem. They needed to monitor soil gas levels at a future carbon capture storage site, but it wouldn’t be practical to manually travel to each site to take manual measurements, especially over Wyoming’s harsh winters. Learn how EDG’s soil sampling stations helped UW transform their monitoring capabilities and achieve greater efficiency and reliability.
